About the community
The school is in the community of Grand-Goave, which is located 30 miles from the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The community has a population of roughly 125,000 residents; primarily made up of a younger demographic. It is a close-knit town where everyone knows each other! It is located in an agricultural district that also hosts many tourists that come to see its beautiful coasts. The region’s economy is sustained by agriculture, fishing, small animal farms, motorcycle taxis, and small businesses and shops. Education is also an important part of the community. The people are full of compassion and often support each other through community programs and small business loans. However, drought and political instability have caused frequent struggles in the community since the 1980’s.
