Medicine and So Much More

A Lifeline trip is so much more than just a stamp in your passport. See how a medical team made a difference in a small community in Ecuador!

In Llano Chico, Ecuador, when someone gets sick or injured, finding care is not easy.

There are no private clinics, and most people cannot afford a private doctor’s fees. Neighboring communities offer public healthcare, but appointments often require waiting as long as 3-6 months to be seen. And for emergency services, a patient may have to wait an entire day before getting help.

Poverty impacts the quality of living situations, health and nutrition. High blood pressure and diabetes are common. Poor nutrition, workplace injuries, and alcoholism also lead to health issues… and cause discouragement.

So when a Lifeline medical team came to three locations in and around Llano Chico in November, the community was thrilled! More than 370 people flocked to the sites for health care.
What a blessing!

The team treated injuries and illnesses, and provided medications and vitamins. Some patients even received eyeglasses. “Some people were so happy that they could read again that they nearly cried!” said Claudia Meerkaemper, Ecuador Country Director.

“I saw people pray for the team to say thank you. It is good to give health care, but what made the difference was the love they received: a smile, a hug, and a prayer. The team took the time to listen to the patients. That was a huge blessing,” she said.
