Scared, No! Warned, Yes!

Written by Lorena, English teacher at Rey Sabio Salomón

Santiago Naranja teaches students about disaster preparedness.

In case of a natural disaster, our students at Rey Sabio Salomón School in Ecuador are ready, thanks to a visit from Santiago Naranjo.

Santiago is a local television personality who taught the students about disaster preparedness through lively, fun, and important safety lessons. He is committed to providing public education about disaster readiness.

He visited Rey Sabio Salomón School because it is located in an at-risk zone. Its location near the mountains makes it prone to landslides and floods. Last year, a mudslide swept through the community and caused deaths and extensive destruction. In addition, it is close to the Cotapaxi volcano which has recently been showing signs of mild volcanic activity. Local families and students know how important it is to be prepared for disasters such as these.

Our students learned things such as the importance of having an emergency supply backpack, staying calm in the face of a disaster, and even disaster-resistant construction practices. They were entertained by Santiago's joy and humor but learned a lot at the same time.

And in the process of learning, the students were challenged to thank God for giving them a place to live and for His love for them.
