Kajiado

Kajiado at a Glance

Kajiado is in the southern part of Kenya where the Maasai people live. The people are known internationally for their distinctive customs and dress. Households grow popular crops like tomatoes, cabbages, and bananas, while farmers grow maize, sorghum millet, and beans. Livestock include cattle, sheep, and goats. The main source of income includes livestock farming, construction, employment in the mining sector, and bodaboda (motorbikes).

Kajiado is a young community with nearly half the population under the age of fifteen! While this bodes well for the future, the youth right now have numerous challenges caused by peer pressure, parental negligence, and cultural practices. Challenges include sexually transmitted diseases, HIV and AIDS, female genital mutilation, drug and substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy. Additionally, school enrollment is modest. Although some children complete their primary education, most (74%) do not proceed to secondary education (like middle or high school); a large number of school children are not in school at all.

The key problems that perpetuate poverty in this community include poor school enrollment, female genital mutilation, early marriages, high numbers of vulnerable households, and poor access to health care. To address these multifaceted problems, a community-wide intervention was initiated. By engaging community leaders, both men and women, the strategic objectives are to improve livelihoods through economic opportunities, promote basic education of the poor, improve holistic well-being for vulnerable households, promote primary health care to prevent disease, and build capacity of the church for holistic ministry.

Lifeline in Kajiado

Kajiado is a community in our BeFriend program (a partnership between Lifeline and Life in Abundance). BeFriend connects a church in the U.S. or Canada to a local church around the world in a meaningful way. Through this partnership, the U.S. or Canadian church can fuel empowerment and break the cycle of poverty in a marginalized community.
